5 Amazing Tips Every Dog Owner Should Know

5 Amazing Tips Every Dog Owner Should Know

Ok, so maybe you have been a dog owner all your life or maybe you are just about to pick up your very first puppy. No matter how much or how little experience you have we could all use some amazing tips in our pet parenting tool belt, right?! If you are looking to lay a positive puppy foundation, build a stronger bond with your dog, and keep your pet happy and healthy year-round, look no further! It’s time to dive into 5 tips that will change your life as a pet parent!

1. First things first: Puppies

Let’s start at the very beginning, shall we? Have you ever had a dog who wouldn’t let you clip their nails or even brush behind their ears? You are not alone; this is far more common than you might think. When you first get a new puppy there are certain things you can introduce to them right off the bat to avoid potential difficulties in the future. As a pup much of their fear, like a baby, has not developed yet. The window of opportunity to familiarize them with things that have the potential to become frightening to them is smaller than you might think. We suggest starting the introduction process as soon as your fur baby arrives and maintaining consistency throughout puppyhood. Below is a list of activities to use as a starting point along with suggested timing. Every household is different so add or take away based on what makes the most sense for you and your new family member.

  • Nail clipping: multiple times a week, even if you just pretend it will get them used to the clippers, the sounds, and the feeling of you touching their paws.
  • Brushing: daily, use a few different types of brushes on any given week to alter the feel, this will help them to feel more comfortable when they go to the groomer, who uses a different brush than they are “used to”.
  • Bathing: weekly, they may not always need it and it may be best not to shampoo every week (to keep their skin from drying out) but it is important that they practice getting in the tub/shower/clam shell and all the actions that go along with getting a bath. This will make you and your groomer’s life much easier in the future.

2. The Great Pumpkin

Pumpkin is a super food for our pups! It is no secret that every dog experiences diarrhea at some point in their lives. If your dog is having tummy trouble and producing soft/runny stool, try giving them a scoop of pumpkin. Pumpkin is rich in fiber which helps to ease digestion, absorbs water, and supplies energy to stimulate positive function of the intestines. Fiber is a prebiotic which helps to promote beneficial bacteria and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. Mix a scoop of pumpkin in your pets’ food or give it on its own the next time they have an upset tummy. Keep a can of plain pumpkin in your pantry just for your furry friend.

3. Parting is such sweet sorrow

Let’s face it, many of us haven’t been away from our pets for more than a few hours here and there for the last year! The more we are around our pets, the more difficult departures can be on them. When we go from spending all day every day together to leaving for long periods of time it disrupts our pet’s routine and comfort level. Separation anxiety takes hold in so many of our furry friends but there are things we can actively to do ease their nervousness.

  • Practice your “exit routine” without the exit Go about your normal routine before leaving the house and then DON’T. It will make the “real thing” far less hyper for your pet.
  • Leave on the TV or Radio The human element and sound will offer them comfort.
  • Stay calm It can be difficult to remain at ease when we know how upset our pet gets when we leave. They will feel that energy so be sure to take a few deep breaths and remain calm when you go to depart.
  • Pawsitive association Our recommendation is a frozen peanut butter filled Kong. Any special treat or new toy to keep them happy and busy as you head out the door will do!
  • Exercise daily A tired pup is a happy pup.

4. H20

Did you know that your dog should drink 1 ounce of water per day for every pound of body weight? For large breed dogs that means over 100oz of water EVERY DAY! It may come as a surprise, but dogs are made up of 80% water, as opposed to the human 55-60%. This means it is 20-25% more likely for a pet to become dehydrated. Yikes! In order to prevent dehydration, it is important to know what this looks like in our pets.

  • Loss of appetite
  • Reduced energy levels
  • Lethargy
  • Heavy panting
  • Sunken eyes
  • Dry mouth/gums
  • Loss of skin elasticity

If you pet experiences any of these symptoms try to entice them with a fresh bowl of water. Whenever possible monitor your pet’s water intake. It is not always easy to measure exactly how much our pet is drinking on a daily basis but see our list below to  help promote water consumption.

  • Keep water bowls clean.
  • Use more than one water dish.
  • Frozen treats
  • Get a drinking fountain.
  • Add water to your pet’s food.

As always, our goal as a pet parent is to have the happiest and healthiest pets possible. Knowing the signs of dehydration and tips for how to keep your pet hydrated will keep your fur baby living their best life all year long!

5. Hug your dog!

Our pups associate touch with feelings of happiness and belonging. When we give a hug our bodies (both human and canine) release oxytocin, a feel-good chemical, which has a significant positive impact on the body. Something as simple as a hug can strengthen the bond between man and man’s best friend. It has been proven that a dog who feels safe and secure not only physically but emotionally is much less likely to exhibit destructive behaviors within their environment ex. chewing on furniture or using the bathroom in the house. Give a hug and you will build their confidence, strengthen your bond, and live in harmony.

There you have it, 5 tips that will enhance you and your pup’s life far beyond what you can imagine. Everyone needs a few tricks for those challenging circumstances, to keep your pet operating smoothly and cultivate a loving bond. Now you can feel like an expert in your own home and share these amazing tips with all your pet parent pals. Do you have an amazing pet parenting tip that has worked for you? 3 Course Thanksgiving Menu Your Dog Will Love

Thanksgiving is almost here and while you are planning out your feast or what to bring this year don’t forget about the dogs in your life! Whether you are hosting or joining, if pups will be in attendance these three dog safe recipes are a MUST for your furry friends this holiday. While yummy scraps of people-food are usually well received, they are not always the safest or healthiest for our pets. Our pets have offered us comfort, therapy, and companionship in, dare I say, the wildest year to date. The least we can do is give them the Thanksgiving meal of their doggy dreams!

Our 3 Course Menu:

Appetizer: Sweet Potato Chews

Main Course: Turkey Meatloaf

Dessert: Pumpkin Pie

Click on each link to download a printable recipe card, or click here to get all three: 3 Dog Friendly Recipes

Sweet Potato Chews

Both heathy and satisfying, these sweet potato appetizer chews are the perfect way to start a Thanksgiving meal made for a king/queen, and with only 3 ingredients prep is super easy. The primary ingredient, sweet potatoes, are an excellent source of vitamin A, known to promote healthy skin, coat, eyes, nerves, and muscles in dogs. As well as rich in vitamin B, C, potassium, and calcium to name a few! Healthy and delicious is a winning combination for anyone, especially our pets. These sweet treats will whet your dog’s whistle before they even come out of the oven.

Dog Friendly Sweet Potato Chew ingredients

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • Cinnamon (to sprinkle, optional)

Note: Double or reduce this recipe based on your dog’s size and appetite.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.
  2. Slice sweet potatoes length wise about ¼” thick. Cut strips in half for smaller treats.
  3. Line a cookie sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
  4. Place sweet potatoes on a cookie sheet (I prefer a cookie sheet over a bowl) to toss in olive oil. Each strip should be coated thoroughly but not standing in olive oil.
  5. Sprinkle with cinnamon (If desired, they are yummy with or without it!)
  6. Bake for 2.5 – 3 hours. (The long cook time is what makes these chews tougher and longer lasting the way our dogs like it.)
  7. Let cool. Then serve!
  8. Store in airtight storage container in the refrigerator for 2 weeks or freeze for up to 4 months.

Turkey Meatloaf for dogs

Introducing the star doggy dish this holiday, Turkey Meatloaf for dogs!  This main course is the “feel good food” your dog has been waiting their entire life for! This recipe is great for dogs with sensitive systems or who are allergy prone. From protein to plant-based nutrients this health-conscious meal is one that every dog owner/friend can get behind. Edible for humans and cats too!

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups cooked rice
  • 8 oz. peas or chopped green beans (whichever you have on hand is great!)
  • 3 large carrots, diced
  • 1 apple, diced

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Mix ALL ingredients together in a large bowl with your hands. Like meatloaf, you do not want to over work the meat. Using your hands will make combining all ingredients quicker and easier.
  3. Scoop mixture into your pan of choice. I used a loaf pan, same as when I make meatloaf for the humans in my life. A muffin tin is great for a smaller snack size turkey feast or for smaller dogs. Whatever pan you choose, be sure to adjust your cook time accordingly. (see below)
  4. Time to bake!
  • Loaf pan 60 minutes
  • Muffin tin 35 minutes
  1. Let cool before serving and store leftovers in an airtight container. Leftovers should last up to 4 days or freeze for up to 4 months.

Dog approved Pumpkin Pie

No meal is complete without dessert, even for your dog! Now you and your pup can enjoy pumpkin pie together. These canine approved pumpkin pies are both adorable and enjoyable. I made them in regular size muffin tins, but for the tiny pups in your life consider using a mini muffin tin for manageability and increased quantity. Happy Turkey Day to all you fur babies out there. Show your parents some extra post-Thanksgiving meal snuggles when you finish off this lip-smacking third and final course.

Pie Crust

  • 1 cup Almond flour (can substitute Whole-wheat flour, note it is not GF)
  • 4 Tbsp. coconut oil
  • 6 Tbsp. cold water

Pie Filling

  • 6 oz pumpkin puree
  • 1 Tsp. ground cinnamon
  • pinch ground ginger
  • Greek yogurt (to dollop on top)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Combine almond flour and coconut oil into a food processor and pulse until mixed. Add water slowly until dough holds together.
  3. Once dough is consistent divide into 4 even sections and roll into 3 ½” rounds.
  4. Place dough into a parchment lined muffin tin. Use a fork to mold edges of the dough as desired.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. While baking your crust, combine pumpkin puree, ground cinnamon, and ginger into mixing bowl. Mix well.
  7. Removed the cooked crusts from oven and let cool.
  8. Once your crusts have cooled remove them from the muffin tin.
  9. Spoon your filling evenly into each pie shell.
  10. Pop back in the oven for 5 minutes to give it that warm pumpkin pie taste.
  11. Remove from oven, add a delicious dollop of Greek yogurt to the top and VOILA! Dessert is served for your deserving pup.

Preventing Pet Halloween Hazards

Preventing Pet Halloween Hazards

Halloween is a festive and fun holiday but for our pets it can be a dangerous and often scary one. The loud noises, spooky costumes, constant opening and closing of the door, and a plethora of harmful candy everywhere make for one hazardous holiday for our furry friends. Prevention is the key to giving our pets a truly Happy Halloween! Please remember that Halloween is not a typical day for your pet. Even if they stay home and inside the same way they do every day/night Halloween will undoubtedly bring something new and unexpected right to your doorstep. Create a plan and be aware of the-potential hazards of Halloween for your pet. Did you know black animals have a special part to play in this holiday? We are sharing  fun facts about our shadowy friends and their place around the world!

Ding Dong

Knock knocks and ding dongs are frequent sounds of an exciting Halloween. The flow of Halloweeners may be a little slower this year due to COVID-19 but you can probably guarantee at least one or two trick-or-treaters. Even if your dog or cat is usually great with visitors, the ghosts, goblins, cat woman, and possibly the president are sure to catch your fur baby by surprise. Keep your pet safely secured in their crate or in a bedroom towards the back of the house where they can remain calm and cozy on your bed. Give your pet their favorite treats or bone and make their space special this All Hallow’s Eve to help them stay calm and content.

Costumes

Dressing up your pet this Halloween? There is nothing cuter than a dog or cat in an adorable costume but there are a few things to be aware of when dressing your fur baby.

  • Make sure the costume does not impair your pet’s ability to see, breath, move or hear. With all the excitement of Halloween night it is important that our pets can function at their best to avoid any added anxiety or confusion.
  • Don’t forget to check the costume for hardware such as buttons or closures as well as loose strings or pieces they can swallow. Avoid an emergency trip to the vet by double checking your fur baby’s costume both on and off before the festivities begin.
  • Costumes on pets are not a “set it and forget it” kind of thing. With all the movement our pets make things can shift and become dangerous quickly. Don’t forget to keep an eye on your pet throughout the time they are in costume to ensure their safety all Halloween long.

Trick-or-Treating

Planning to bring Fido with you trick-or-treating? Whether your pet has the best costume ever or they rock their usual fur coat, safety is key to making your pet’s trick-or-treating experience a positive one with a happy ending (home safe and sound). Here are a few tips for pet safety while out and about:

  • Always keep your pet’s ID tags on them. Even if Fluffy’s collar doesn’t match her costume keep it on for her safety.
  • The most well-behaved dogs can still be frightened by Freddy Krueger or Cat Woman and decide to run off, making it extra important that they wear a proper fitting harness and have a sturdy leash. Halloween is sensory overload for humans and animals alike. Stay aware of your surroundings as candy buckets will be everywhere. Bring a few Pumpkin Spice Pet Snacks to offer your pet as a distraction throughout their trick-or-treating experience.
  • Last, but certainly not least, you know how your parents always checked your candy before you could eat it?! Do the same for your pet! If a house offers them a treat don’t be afraid to ask about brand, ingredients, or anything else that is important to know when it comes to your pet and their diet. Happy trick-or-treating!

Chocolate, Candy, and Glow Sticks…OH MY

The hazards of choking and possibility of poison ingestion is real but avoidable! Always keep the candy buckets/bags out of reach of your pet. If your cat loves to jump on the table or countertop place the candy in a closed cabinet or closet. Glow sticks are probably the coolest thing your pet has ever seen and will undoubtedly get their attention. Unfortunately, if they chew on the stick they can ingest harmful material. Keep glow sticks and other intriguing, potentially hazardous, objects out of reach of pets. Likewise, if you choose to light candles keep them out of reach of your dog and cat. The last thing you want is an emergency visit to the vet because Sabrina’s tail caught on fire! To offset the things they don’t get to enjoy on Halloween have special treats of their very own on hand. They can experience the joy of Halloween just like you and the kiddos with delicious homemade pet-friendly treats. Want a yummy fall recipe your pet will love? Try our Pumpkin Spice Pet Snacks recipe. Pet satisfaction guaranteed!

The truth about black cats

Once upon a time black cats were considered bad luck, a curse to anyone who encountered them, and were strongly associated with witchcraft. These formerly distrusted animals are now a popular legend and staple for Halloween décor all over the world. Black cats and Halloween go hand in hand but not in the unnerving way they once did. According to the ASPCA, the United States Humane Society, and many others, the long running concern that black cats are used for satanic practices and ritual sacrifices on and around Halloween are in fact a myth. Old beliefs die hard and this one is no exception, but spreading the truth about black cats can help to mold a brighter future for our shadowy friends.

Interesting fact: Black animal features tend to blend into the background in photos, making them hard to distinguish. This is actually a big reason why black cats and dogs are adopted at a lower rate. Especially now, with COVID-19, pets are being adopted from shelters and adoption centers based on little personal interaction and lots of photo/video to potential new fur parents. Hard truth, but not showing well in pictures can be a death sentence for so many precious black animals. The reality is black cats are just as loveable and offer the same joy to one’s life as the next colorful kitty. Now more than ever it is important to spread the truth about black cats. Consider adopting a black cat or encouraging a friend to go black if they are looking for a new feline addition to their family. Together we can make a big difference for black cats everywhere.

Fun Facts About Black Cats

  • Worldwide there are dozens of countries that view black cats as good luck.
  • Ancient Egyptians worshiped black cats!
  • Japan considers black cats good luck, especially single ladies as they are believed to attract potential suiters.
  • The Russians say ALL cats are lucky! (Amen!)
  • Scotland: a stray black cat arriving at your door signifies prosperity!
  • For hundreds of years sailors have believed that black cats bring good luck to their vessel and ensure safe travel.
  • Black Cat appreciation day is August 17th
  • National Black Cat Day is October 27th

Looking to adopt a black cat of your own? Some shelters place a hold on the adoption of black cats this time of year to avoid any harm that may come to them around Halloween based on the history we mentioned earlier. Old beliefs die hard, remember? Please remain patient and do not get discouraged if you are required to wait a few weeks before taking your mysterious kitty home. This is an effort to protect the legendary black cats in their care.

How to Have A Pet-Friendly Halloween

How to Have A Pet-Friendly Halloween

The leaves are at their peak, pumpkins have new homes on every porch in the neighborhood, and, if you’re like me, you have too many bags of candy in your online grocery cart. These seasonal traits mean Halloween is Just Around the Corner. This year we are making it a pet friendly Halloween for those precious fur babies who have been keeping us sane in 2020. This spooky holiday isn’t usually on the list of “Favorites” for our pets. In fact, trick-or-treaters, costumed kids and adults, and scary noises can add up to a stressful day or night for your dog or cat, in addition to your stress worrying about someone getting out of the house with all the door openings. But there are ways to make Halloween safe and exciting for your pet! Grab your bucket of overpriced candy and get ready because Halloween is coming up PAWESOME this year.

Fright Night Festivities

The best way to have a pet friendly Halloween is to include your pet in as much of the holiday fun as possible! Get your pet in the spirit of Halloween with a few of our favorite pet-centric games the whole family can enjoy. The public activities of your town may be cancelled this year due to COVID-19 but the holiday itself is not so let’s dive into some fright night fun to give your pet a Halloween they won’t soon forget! Be sure to scroll all the way down for our delicious Pumpkin Spice Pet Snacks recipe.

  1. Watch pet approved Halloween movies.

Do you find your dog or cat watching along when you have the TV on? ME TOO! So, play them a movie they can see themselves in to really keep the All Hallows Eve spirit alive this time of year. Here are our pet must-sees for Halloween.

  • It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
  • Frankenweenie (Tim Burton version)
  • The Dog Who Saved Halloween
  • Scooby Doo: The Movie
  • Hocus Pocus (for our feline friends)
  1. Take your pet for a drive!

If your pet loves the car take them for a socially distant car ride to enjoy the sights and sounds of Halloween in your town. From your Main St. to the neighborhood with the spookiest decorations hop in the car and take it all in with your furry friend. Halloween can be a dangerous time for pets who are out and about on their own, particularly our beautiful black cats and dogs (stay tuned for details on this in next week’s blog). Be sure to keep your pets close and have current ID tags on them at all times. Go for a family car ride and don’t forget to bring your Pumpkin Spice Pup Snacks.

  2. Play Halloween Games.

If you are staying in or even having a few friends over this Halloween, why not play some pet friendly games with your dog or cat! It is time to get creative on this one. Think about what your pet enjoys and come up with a game that involves that “thing” or activity you know they love. While you are thinking about a custom game just for your fur baby try out one of our Spook-tastic activities your pet will die for.

  • Bob for Bones – Grab a bucket or basket and toss in a delicious bone or two. For cats make it their favorite toy or a few of their treats. Be sure to have a few other items in the bucket for them to “bob around”. You can make it as challenging or as simple as you want based on what your pet will enjoy most. Have fun Bobbing for Bones!
  • Costume Show – If your pet enjoys being dressed up, then chances are you have more than one costume. Let your dog or cat be the star of the evening and show off multiple costumes, even if it’s just the two of you. Don’t forget take pictures and tag us on Instagram @jac_pet_care. If your dog is like my Lola Bear, who thinks costumes are out to get them, skip this activity and try one that is more up their alley.
  • Tricks For Treats – Let’s get literal! Our pets love to please us so doing tricks is not a chore but something that gives them a real sense of belonging and accomplishment. Time to put those tricks to the test. Give your dog (or cat for those fancy felines) a command to do a “trick”, and when they perform it perfectly (we know they will) give them a treat! Have your bucket of treats or platter of Pumpkin Spice Pet Snacks close by all night long and play Tricks for Treats every time trick or treaters come to your house. No trick or treaters? Play as you please.

Pumpkin Spice Pet Snacks

It’s Fall and the aroma of Pumpkin Spice Latte fills your nose and your heart like the gentle touch of a new flannel. Replace Pumpkin Spice Latte with your fall favorite and you get the picture. Now think about your pet and how much they would love to experience the excitement of seasonal sensations just like that. If there is one thing I know it is that the way to our pet’s hearts is through their stomach with a pet-friendly treat. These Pumpkin Spice Pet Snacks are quick and easy. With only 5 ingredients and no cooking involved these treats are a hassle free, make em’ anytime kind of recipe! YAY!

Ingredients

1 cup pumpkin puree (use canned for “hassle free”)

1/2 tbsp. cinnamon

5 tbsp. natural peanut butter (I use Teddie All Natural Peanut Butter)

1 cup coconut flour

1/3 tbsp. ginger, freshly grated

Optional: Use quick oats or powdered carob for rolling–if making for your cat we suggest a sprinkle of cat nip.

Lumi and Lola both approve of Pumpkin Spice Pet Snacks! Follow these two on Instagram @lumiandlola

Combine pumpkin puree, peanut butter, coconut flour, cinnamon, and ginger in a mixing bowl. Mix by hand, add additional peanut butter as needed to keep the dough from becoming crumbly. Once the contents are fully mixed it is time to roll them into balls. The size of these round snacks should be based on the size of your pet. For kitties and small dogs, we suggest marble size rounds, for large breed pups you can go for golf ball size if you like. Of course, the smaller they are the more this recipe makes. Once they are rolled into balls you can spice them up a bit by rolling them in quick oats or carob powder and…Voila! In 10 minutes or less your Pumpkin Spice Pet Snacks are ready for consumption by some incredibly happy four-legged Halloweeners.

Vet Tech Week: How to Thank Your Vet Tech

Vet Tech Week: How to Thank Your Vet Tech

Every year a week in October is dedicated to veterinarian technicians. This week is a time to celebrate all the wonderful things they do for our precious fur babies day in and day out. These special people are the first to greet us and our pets when we go to the vet. They work tirelessly to provide comfort in uncomfortable situations, and they hold our pet’s paws when they need it most. Their daily duties go well beyond the front of house smiles we see checking in and out. In fact, you might be surprised at what all falls under their job description.

Duties of a vet tech

  • Assess animal behavior
  • Monitor vitals (heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, etc.)
  • Help the Vet with physical exams
  • Prepare/assemble equipment and tools
  • Give injections and other medications
  • Take blood/stool samples
  • Assist surgeries
  • Maintain safe and sterile working environment (and, COVID-free as well)
  • Explain animal status to owners
  • Feed and care for animals who are staying at the Vet’s
  • Clean, bandage and wrap wounds
  • Collect and record animals’ medical histories
  • Perform diagnostic tests and x-rays
  • On Call for ICU
  • And so much more!

Tabby kitty with Vet Tech

How to thank your vet tech

The above list is but a fraction of the things a vet tech does to keep veterinary clinics running smoothly. Wow, right?! Not to mention our fur babies LOVE THEM, don’t they? A vet tech is the warm hug our pets receive to take that “vet visit” edge off. To show our favorite vet techs how much we appreciate them we have come up with 5 fantastic ways to thank your vet tech this week!

  1. Write a Thank You note

The classic Thank You note is a wonderful way to let your vet tech know how much they mean to you and your pet. Write down a few reasons why you believe they are excellent at their job and how much you appreciate what they do. We all need encouragement, especially when we work hard and passionately every single day. Reading a card that describes the type of positive impact they have had is a gesture your vet tech deserves.

  1. Send flowers

Who doesn’t love to be surprised at work with a bouquet of flowers? It is sure to be a bright spot for your vet tech and will set the tone for an uplifting workday. Let the florist know who it is for so they can spice it up with an animal theme. Sign the card from your pet to avoid “secret admirer” talk and keep it fun!

  1. Create a Gift Basket

Think “pet lover” and go nuts! Purchase things like poop bags (you can NEVER have too many), a collapsible water bowl, paw print socks, animal themed coffee mug, (these days) a facemask, pet supply store gift card, the list could go on forever. Put it all together and BOOM, you have a gift basket that will be the envy of all the other vet techs.

  1. Leave a positive review

Nothing goes further these days than a positive review online! Everyone is reading reviews nowadays to make their decisions of where to go, what to do, and when to do it. Recognizing your vet tech in the cyber world will go further than most any physical gift. It is something that will be noticed not only by clients but their superiors and future employers. A positive review for your vet tech is the gift that keeps on giving.

  1. Make a donation

Choose an animal charity that you love or know your vet technician supports and donate. Whether it is an animal rights group or a local shelter, we animal lovers find that a gift to our furry friends is a gift to ourselves as well. Make your thank you one of impact when you donate to an organization hard at work to aid the animal world. Don’t forget to send along a card making them aware of your donation and the reasons behind it. A donation is a thank you that reaches beyond you and your technician to have a greater influence on the planet.

Hands hold give sign

Whether you have had the same vet tech for the last 10 years or you had your first encounter with a wonderful tech last week now is the time to show them your appreciation. Write a thank you card for their hard work or put your thanks to work in a review online. Send them something to brighten their day whether it is beautiful flowers or a fun pet themed basket. You can even donate to animal organizations near or far to show your thanks. Whichever you choose take the time to appreciate your vet tech in a positive way.

Share a positive vet tech experience you have had with us! How did you thank them? Share your Thank You ideas, the more the merrier.

Celebrating National Dog Week

Celebrating National Dog Week

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, National Dog Week! As canine lovers we hardly feel there is a week full of more love, fur, and slobbery kisses than this one. We have an entire week to celebrate the beloved pups that make our lives full, but what the heck IS National Dog Week? NDW is dedicated to celebrating dogs and generating awareness of causes that focus on improving the lives of all dogs. Human personal education and mindfulness as a dog owner, lover, or even an acquaintance is as much a part of this special week as celebrating the dogs themselves. Without further ado let’s jump into how to celebrate this glorious week, shall we?

Volunteer

Volunteer, Volunteer, Volunteer! Local dog shelters and dog adoption organizations always need volunteers especially those passionate about our furry friends! This is something we can do all year round but if you are looking to give it a try for the first time what better time to start?  This is a great option for individuals and families with older children to make a big impact right in their own town. Becoming a foster home is also an excellent way to volunteer. Bringing a homeless pup into your life while they wait for their forever home is one of the most rewarding ways to help the dog community. As a starting point below is a list of a few local volunteer opportunities.  Happy Volunteering!

Celebrate Dog Week by supporting the places your dog likes to shop. Head to your locally owned pet supply store for those special treats for Fido or that new rope toy for Gino. Supporting local businesses with a passion for helping the dog community is like donating and pleasing your pup at the same time, it’s a win-win! Local pet supply stores often have volunteer opportunities as well as strong ties to animal advocacy/adoption organizations. Get to know the locally owned pet shops near you and discover ways you can become involved. If you are in the Plymouth area check out Papas Pet Project & Pet Supplies Plus.

Donate

Donations are the life blood of local shelters, adoption agencies, and advocacy organizations, during National Dog Week and all year long. Whether you donate your time as a volunteer or your money these organizations can’t do what they do without you! Research organizations that interest you and find one that aligns with your beliefs when it comes to the dog community, such as adopting less adoptable dogs or groups with a mission for stopping animal cruelty. Wherever your dog passion lies there is a place to match for you to donate.

Education

Celebrate National Dog Week by giving yourself the gift of education. Read books, blogs and articles dedicated to awareness in the dog community. Discover how you can be an advocate for dogs in a sustainable way all year long. Take some time to understand your own dog or any dogs you encounter regularly. Get to know the breed/mix, learn how to be the best dog owner/friend you can be! Knowledge is power, as the saying goes, what you learn will translate into your daily dog loving life. From understanding the current needs of your local shelters to learning how you can socialize your own dog the list of things to learn is endless!

Break the mold

Okay, so we have talked a lot about how to help the dog community but what about the precious pup in your home? Branch out from your dog’s regular routine and explore new places, friends, and fun! Try a dog friendly trail that is new to you and your pooch (see Dog Friendly Trails in Plymouth, MA Part: 1 & Part 2 for local options). Eat out at a restaurant that loves when you bring your pup, like Stack Shack in Plymouth. Head to the dog park to meet new friends! Does your dog LOVE a special type of bone they only get on Christmas or their birthday? Treat them to one or two during a week devoted entirely to them! Break the mold of your dog’s normal routine and spice it up for them this week.
