Summer in Plymouth, MA, is spectacular, but the influx of tourism can sometimes mean our dogs aren’t welcome at beaches, trails, and other establishments. Major bummer, but never fear! We’ve put together a list of the best outdoor spots that are open to you and your pup all summer long right here in Plymouth! What’s better than getting to spend parts of your summer in Plymouth MA with your dog? These fabulous places get two paws up from America’s Hometown Hound 2023 Tim Nash and America’s Hometown Hound 2022 Otis Crowley. Thanks for looking out for all your furry friends, fellas!

1. Plymouth Beach + Sandy’s

Beach day, anyone?!? If you’re a beach goer and your pup enjoys the ocean this will become a must-stop spot for you this summer! Not only can you and your pup spend the day in the sun and sand, but you can also grab a refreshing pup cup (or a platter of deliciously fried seafood for the humans) to top off your excursion and ensure it’s the Best. Day. Ever. Take a swim in the ocean or play fetch with friends and bring your beach umbrella for shade. The beach and Sandy’s seafood shack are dog friendly but please keep your pup on a leash.

2. Ellisville Harbor State Park

Ellisville is hands down our favorite trail to hike with our pups! The path is broad, and about 85% is shady. Its down-and-back design makes it easy to follow (no getting lost on this one), and when you reach the end, enjoy the lovely and secluded Ellisville Beach. Depending on the tide, your pup may enjoy scavenging through the rocks or catching eyes with a sea lion just off the coast. Pack a picnic or make it a quick down-and-back trip, but either way, it’s a venture that has something for both you and your pup.

3. Morton Park

Morton Park is Plymouth’s most prominent park area encompassing approximately 200 acres of forest and shoreline! The main entrance is at 248 Summer Street, and from here, you can enjoy 2.5 miles of footpaths and four miles of gravel roads. Much of the areas are shady, making them ideal on a warm summer day for dogs. Morton Park also offers swimming at Little Pond and Billington Sea for a refreshing dip to kick off or wrap up your hike. Check the town website for updates on water safety and any closures before diving in!

Plymouth Rail Trail and Otis AHH

4. North Plymouth Rail Trail

Also known as the Seaside Trail and the Grace Trail, this 1.2-mile trail connects Nelson Memorial Park and Cordage Park. This trail is wide and flat, alternating pavement, concrete, and crushed stone, making it user and stroller friendly. If you’re in the market for a scenic walk, this is the one! While there are shady sections along this trail, there is significant sun exposure, and on warm days it can undoubtedly heat up! Remember to keep your pup on a leash for this trail and treat them to a dip in Nelson Beach before or after your excursion.

Plymouth MA Waterfront with Tim, America's Hometown Hound

5. Brewster Garden & Plymouth Waterfront

You can always count on meeting many new friends when walking along the lovely Plymouth Waterfront and Brewster Gardens. If your dog enjoys meeting new people and pups, we highly recommend a stroll down Water Street. Enjoy some good people-watching, and stop for a nap in one of the many shaded and grassy areas. Even on the hottest of days there is a nice ocean breeze that comes off the harbor, making it truly one of the best places to walk your dog on the South Shore.

There you have it, the top picks by America’s Hometown Hounds, 2023 Tim and 2022 Otis, for the best outdoor places to enjoy for dogs in Plymouth, MA.
